Default P0420 in a 1998 Civic DX

Just picked up a great deal on a 98 hatch, but the CEL was on. The kid said the shop put another Bosch primary O2 sensor in it and it worked for a bit but the code came back on.

I know there is a Bulliten from honda about this, crimping the ignition connectors in the distributor.... but it also says you have to replace the cat.

I was thinking about just throwing on a Ebay special header and getting rid of the cat but I'm sure the CEL will come one after that...

anyone have experience, or two cents they want to throw in?

Have you pulled the code since the light came back on. Was it the same code? Give us the code number.

OK, thats for a "Catalyst Efficiency below threshold" Not an O2. Typically it means the cat converter isn't up to the job. You can either replace it or you can try to clean it out, but I'll warn you it probably will have to be replaced. If you want to try to clean it, PM me and I will walk you through it.

yeah, sorry but I wasnt as specific when I desribed my issue. I understand what P0420 is.... Im a tech by trade but I don't deal with many hondas, nor do many of my friends. I know the cat will prob have to be replaced but I was thinking about bypassing the whole thing since I know i can still get a Inspec sticker when I need it. My whole concern was tricking the ecu so the rear o2 won't cycle as fast as the front so it wont set the CEL.

Never cleaned a Cat before (hollowed them out alot back in the day) .... anything is worth a try

Then as a tech you understand ther isn't any way to disable it, unless you go to a Hondata and disable it.
