I'm detailing my car and need 2500 grit sand paper! What stores stock it? The ones off the top of my head I already called and they only go up to 2000 or less!! I'm right near Annandale! I tried 2000 and it left scratches still after using a wool pad with my toughest compound!

 

seems to be you you could be sanding to hard and deep ive always used 2000 and it came out like a mirror unless your paint is very old and the clear coat is worn down

 

are you wet or dry sanding it?

 

you should be wet sanding it and keep it VERY wet, otherwise you will remove too much clear, 2000 should be fine you only have to go over it lightly it is very easy to remove too much clear. Also are you using steel wool? if so that is your problem, you should be using a terry cloth towel to work in compound then you will have to wax it to remove the swirl marks from the compound.
