I need more spices... At least when I go to Thai places around here and tell them I want it hot they can do it. Most Indian places won't even really kick the heat up that much. Much less carry some of the more off-beat dishes.
+1 to what he said.
The owner is a friend of my father's and he says they "tone it down" so that it will be more appealing to Americans. They end up toning down not just the spices but also the flavors. IMO it ruins the taste.

Check out Coastal Grill. It's off Great Neck rd. next to Havana's. They have fresh rockfish, yellowfin tuna, salmon, duck, pork, oysters, scallops and alot more. $20-25/meal.

Yeah, i live for spice but for indian food i guess I've never had it full on. At Thai places (bangcock and siam mostly), the only way i can eat their red or green curry is 'thai hot.'

oh, and to the OP - there's always Crackers out near the Granby Street bridge. Not cheap either but the food is usually bangin and the beer selection is freakin great

at Nawab, you can ask them to make in Indian spicy. If you still think it tastes bland, then damn you can take some spices.

I would not take a girl to a Hibachi grill for a good date. You will wind up sitting with other people. You want a little privacy.

I would agree with what has been said about Spice of India, and Nawab. I like going to Nawab for lunch, for the buffet, but it is pretty generic. Spice of India is just kind of bad. If you want a nice Indian place, try Rajput in Ghent, good food, really nice atmosphere, and the copper water cups are great. Sushi is always a good date too, especially if you eat it often. You can make recommendations for what she might like. There are lots of good sushi places, but I would stay to stick to one that is strictly sushi, and not a hibachi. Kotobuki is good. Italian is not a good first date because it makes you lazy, but it is good for a fourth or fifth. Try Doraldo's in Williamsburg after going for a walk around market square. Silver Diner, or No Frill Grill can be great places to go for desert after a dinner and a movie date, depending on what time you get out. Someone mentioned Orapax, they are pretty good, sometimes they really go heavy on the salt though. I think for Greek food Nazef is better, and it is very close. Kind of scuzzy looking inside though. Azars right there is pretty good too, if you like Humus type foods.

I eat out way too much.

I've only been here once but it was a great experience. The food is a little more expensive than the "generic restaurants" (Applebee's, TGIFridays, etc) but the quality of the meal was excellent aswell as the atmosphere. The restaurant is very small too and there were not too many other customers, keeping things very quiet and private. The restaurant is inconspicuous from the outside (i actually passed it twice trying to find it) but definately worth checking out

Cool experience if you have never been and the meats are delicious. If you have never heard about a Brazilian steak house waiters walk around with fresh quality meats on large skewers and cut some off for you if you want it.
