Default Jetta help please help

So my girl is driving from Radford to Virginia Beach. She drives a 2001 2.0 jetta. About half way there she says "she thinks" the car started to lose power and when shehit the gas the tach went up to 6k ( from what i could understand the engine did not rev but keep in mind i am on the phone, talking to a girl about a car, trying to get details). Anyhow, after that she said the car began to overheat. Any suggestions or common problems with this car that it could be. She said that when she went to check the coolant she pulled off the cap and it began to rise and the cap was extremely hot, so i am assuming the overheating is not just a problem with the guage.

Thankyou.

I think we are havin the same thing go wrong this sounds similar to something that happend tome. it is a valve on or around the coolant resivour that has gone bad. i dont know exactly where but if you go on vw vortex its pretty common and theres directions on how to fix it. it shouldnt be more than 100 i just took mine to the shop and my pops paid for it

this sensor in this link is the only sensor i can think of coolant related that are common to go bad in mk4's heres the link it causes simular problems when they go bad as your having the mstock one is black i believe or brown cant remember and even if this isnt the problem replace it anyway it needs to be done
