They ended up replacing the thermostat and found that the water pump needed to be replaced. She said, "they replaced the pump, thermostat, and timing belt for $315."

Not bad, considering its a VAG car, those tend to cost more when doing the coolant system.

Yeah, that is what I said. I am not sure if tthe timing belts are like hondas but it is always nice to know that it has a fresh one.

Well with those cars, I believe if the belt goes then the motor goes, essentially. It's not non-interference like some other, more lucky, cars.

btw, these cars have no metal radiator cap. The reservoir cap pretty much is the rad cap. The 2.0l are pie to work on, but she still got a good deal. I would guess the car did NOT need the thermostat, just the water pump.
