cold air intake or short ram intake?

correct. ask anyone with a dual stage intake. the longer the intake runners the slower the response, but more tq.shorter runners equals faster response more power with a little less tq.
long = good for bottom end
short = good for top end
thanx ratedV that was it in a nutshell.

Short ram intakes generally have better top end power, CAIs usually have better midrange power. It has everything to do with intake length, the same as plenum length. The whole air temp thing kinda throws that off though.
It's the same reason that the Type-R manifold makes better top end power than the B16 manifold, but the B16 manifold makes better mid range power. Dyno proven. All about length.
If you want the best of both worlds, (the colder intake air and better top end power), get a short ram intake and make a cold air box for it so it doesn't suck in engine compartment air. Then you don't have to take your car apart to clean your filter, you don't have to worry about hydrolocking your engine, and you can buy a cheaper short ram. BUT you'll still have to build a box around your filter. Nothing is freee......

yea, or you can fab somehitng up similar to my CAI
that big black piece's opening is right by the front of the bay/tip(top) of the hood so the heated air from the engine doesnt interfere with the intake, you could probably diy a better one, with a cone filter and wider opening and more direct air flow. but you get the idea. its cold air with out the crazy piping going everywhere.
