I don't think it's fair to compare a Mac to a PC because there are so many variables for a PC and so few for a Mac. As for being able to plug anything up and have the pc recognize it, I can't remember the last time I plugged anything up via USB and didn't have it recognize it. I never have to install software or drivers. I'm still usng Vista and when I plugged my Droid in for the first time, I didn't have any problems at all. I can mount the sd card as a temporary drive and drag and drop files. There are always going to be things out of your control, but I've found Vista to actually be pretty stable compared to previous OS.

Oh, and you can run Windows on a Mac btw.

I've owned, and will continue to own Mac's. I admit that I do prefer my Mac for graphic design and video editing.
