I guess you do not know what people are already doing with the stock ecu. I am on the stock ecu, and converted it to speed density. You really do not need a stand alone past 400whp.

oh people are using stock ecu and convereted to speed density? interesting. Im not an Evo guy but work on them a lot, so I may not be up to speed with some things.

Seems like the Denso coil packs work well as an upgrade, some guy makes a plug and play kit for under $400. Same coils used in some Toyotas including the tC.

Plus going past 400 I would recommend going stand-alone and a speed density set-up simply because the factory MAF housing is restrictive with that honeycomb mess.
I've ran gaps from 18 to 28 with a power difference of 0. Gapping plugs is annoying though, so better ignition is almost worthwhile just out of laziness so you can drop the plugs in without gapping them.

And yea the stock ECUs have been cracked open pretty good. They even have some real time editing stuff now. If you run a standalone though you can do some more tricks to get more out of the stock ignition. Personally I prefer a standalone for any serious car because everything can be done much faster and easier but for the savings of cost the stock ECU is extremely versatile.

Good news. Car was started and ran yesterday

Base map and about 500 or so miles of break in time and the car will be done until I order the big turbo and injectors.
