Wow, I just got a great idea for a new product: A circuit to turn a dash indicator light on for an adjustable amount of time after the ignition is turned on. Basically you could use it to mimic the standard startup pattern for something like the SRS light.

Totally illegal, and the people who would need are usually cheap bastards, but it would be a useful product.

Shit, I'm on vacation, I could whip a circuit board layout together in a few hours. Then there's the legality part. Oh well, nevermind.

 

also you can loop the female of the srs airbag plug(loop or cut and wire together)......alot of the older brands of wheels came with a male plug that made the light out(simulated the code)

A resistor can't mimic an ABS system that is sitting on the floor of your garage.

 

555 Timer + Relay = done?

 

You don't need a relay with a dash lamp, an n-channel FET or npn transistor would work just as well for that small amount of current. And 555 timers are garbage as far as timers go, plus you'd need a few of them to actually do anything useful in this situation. At least you could power them directly off of the battery (with a proper protection network) without a voltage regulator if you got one of the slightly more modern 18VDC variants like a 7555.

Actually, I'll take that back. A 555 would be OK in something really low precision like this. You'd still need a few of them to mimic the standard flash sequence though, or maybe a 556 or 558. They're all just so damn sensitive to just about everything.

 

Mostly a joke, you're talking about a simple process of keeping a light on for X seconds and then shutting off. I removed my ABS and I have an Arduino controlling the light. Only one real rule for it, wile the key is in the start position stay lit, once its off wait 3 seconds and then turn the light off.

The Arduino Mini is 20 bucks but with spare parts and the larger chips you could make one for less than 5 bucks.

 

You could do all of that with a pair of HC221 single shots and maybe a single logic gate. Shouldn't be any need for a microcontroller at all, but for $20 why not.. I was thinking more along the lines of a sub-$1 PIC in a 6 pin package if a micro was needed.


That Arduino Mini has absolutely no protection against overvoltage or reverse polarity BTW, so be careful with that.
