Bosozoku has it's roots in the 50's and was a way for primarily poorer rural kids to rebel, not at all dissimilar to US "greaser" culture from around the same period with the associated motorcycles, hot rods, etc. If anything, the Japanese copied greasers, although I think that both arose organically.

As it relates to automobiles, the style has taken cues primarily from various classes of road racing over the years, particularly 70's Japan Touring Car and then Super Silhouette later. It's always been primarily a motorcycle-centric phenomena, but somehow over here the word is synonymous not with the bike gangs but with a certain conception of a car modifying style that is only half accurate.

For instance, none of these following cars are "bosozoku" particularly, but that's the first thing that people here would think of when describing them.

 

Also, let's knock this shit off. Don't want to hear the crying when some dude with cable cutters ruins your day.
