actually yes, anything other than a OEM exhaust or factory option is illegal. most cops will not pull you over for just an exhaust unless its loud enough to give them a reason to. suspension is the same way, its illegal to have lowering arms and stuff on your car but only a dick cop will give you a ticket for it. just because the car passes inspection does not mean everything is legal.
ive been pulled over manyyyyyy times for it, and they always warn me of my suspension but never go the extra mile to ticket me for it.

From what iver heard, having anything that doesnt remain failthful to the stock exhaust look is illegal. I know there was a page in superstreet where they talked about it in va, it said that there isnt a decibal level. But im sorry to hear about them searching you, cause the same thing happened to me, i got pulled for speeding and instead of speeding they gave me an exhaust ticket which gave them "probable cause" to search me, ran the dogs and everything. It sucks. But all i know is that in the Spotsylvania area and Fredericksburg area. There is a meet that goes on once a week called REVex. and the new sherif thats running now supports it full on, and ive talked to the guy who runs REVex and he said that its a possibility that he would talk to all of cops here, not state troopers. but to allow aftermarket exhausts and suspension and lighting on almost a normal basis but deffinately to and from the meets. its pretty legit

Revex is this meet that is just beginning to kick back in and more of the people to go, we might be able to get track events next year. Its held at Salem church in fredericksburg, every Saturday 8-12. Its pretty legit when people actually go. I go on a normal basis, it's free and in fredericksburg, to and from revex, the cops are extremely lienient towards aftermarket anything.

I know a couple cops and you will not get a ticket as long as you don't have holes in the muffler or gutted the cat, although if you are rude to a cop, get in a cops face or make smart remarks he will write you a ticket even if it is legal, but if you buy a magnaflow exhaust or flowmaster etc. then you won't get introuble for it being loud if you are not being rude or ignorent toward the cop

Correct. OP doesn't seem to receive a ticket for the exhaust either. Feds / Cops were looking for someone or something unfortunately the OP wasn't it.
