Ok Exploder guys who is good rebuilding these transmissions? My 94 is starting to push fluid out coming up the mountain when its warm out, does not do it when its cold. It shifts perfect all the time and pulls the mountain great but I know its going to need rebuilt this spring. Its my hunting/snow vehicle so I'm not going to tear it apart till spring. I called around and got quoted $1450 to rebuild it but I just wanted to check with you guys and see if there was a shop that was better then the rest.

nice man! sorry i dont know much about trannys yet. i need to rebuild mine also. is it the a4ld or m5od? im guessing the a4, cause the manuals hardly ever die. if you asked damn near anything else id have an answer for you tho.
and what do you mean, when the weather is warm/cold? or when the tranny is warm/cold?

1400 is to much. i have a friend with a 91 and he got his rebuilt, except stronger and he said for mine itd cost 700-750 including a new torque converter. so thats what im gonna be doing. only thing is this shop makes you bring the tranny in. but taking it out yourself isnt that hard.

Thanks man. It is infact the auto tranny and it only does it when the weather is warm (60+ degrees). Its strange because other then that the transmission seems perfect. I have a tranny cooler on it and I checked to make sure it wasn't clogged or anything. Removing it will not be a problem I can do that I just have never taken an auto apart so I don't feel comfortable doing the rebuild myself. I'm a member over on the explorer forum (Blue Streak), I wanted to make it out to the trail run you guys did on the Coal road but I had just gotten it and was still trying to catch up on maintanence that the previous owner slacked on.

puking from the dipstick tube? not the top but further down near the exhaust? that coupling is where an overfill comes out of mostly. or is it coming from between the engine and tranny?
and you said when going up the mountain. after the engines up to temp and within 5min or so of climbing? revving the engine high at all if yes? if all that, it may be overheating.
or is it any engine load during warmer weather?

Don't let me anywhere near your transmission. Freddy can attest, my 4r55e has beaten the fuck out of me,.. twice.

I would start by dropping the pan, replacing the filter and fluid and inspecting the cooler (and its lines for clogs like you said) as well as the valve body gasket (see if there's any gasket material or remnants in the bottom of the pan or sucked up into the filter's metal grate).

Transmission fluid expands when it's overheated, it's sounds like the fluid you have in there may be getting a touch old, or have a little water in it so it COULD potentially boil when it starts to heat up a little over operating temp (200+ degrees). I really recommend a fluid change and maybe the Lucas brand additive to reduce any moisture that may have seeped in. Make sure you put the correct amount of fluid in as well.

just my $.02

lol. youre two for two on trannys.

true. didnt think of old fluid with water in it. deff sounds like overheating to me for the overflowing. i had to stop and let it cool down about 4 times on our obx trip in october. tranny had NO gears at all.

your checklist for now: new fluid, filter, pan gasket. clean the pan while its off too.
post a pic of the fluid.

and since you just got the truck and have no idea if its been serviced lately and while your tranny is still working right(as long as new fluid works), do this before its to late: http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/...d.php?t=158160

The Boggers got delivered today..and I ran them to my friends shop to have them mounted. I'm very pleased with them..they have the perfect humm on the highway and ride much better than expected. They fit just like I wanted them to and no rub at full lock, so I'm happy for that as well. I'll snag some pics tommorrow when it's daylight.

I'm gonna throw the dirt grips up on craigslist and see if I can get a little something for them..

Drag Busa....I'd definitely do a transmission service before dropping it out to do a rebuild as the others have said...filter, gasket and fluid...don't forget to drain the torque converter as well. It maybe running hot because the filter is restricted. A trans service is a lot cheaper than a rebuild.
