1997 VW jetta. 2 liter. 5 speed. starter took a shit on me last night so I bought a new one today and put it in. starts the car just fine, but the starter never stops spinning and makes a loud whizzing noise. i know someone on here has run into a similar scenario. any ideas?

Where did the new one come from? It sounds like something is wrong with it...

Advance. It's a rebuilt bosch though. I'm thinking about exchanging it tomorrow. It doesn't come with shims, or is that something you usually have to source separately?

Get one from another parts store. Stay away from advance starters, alternators, and fuel pumps. They are junk.

Get one that isn't rebuilt if you can. It sounds like it was rebuilt wrong, which is a pretty common problem. If your starter was shimmed, swap those over to the new starter as an initial setting (maybe a... starting point? ) and then see if you need to adjust anything from there.
