I've decided to turbo the M by early spring, I'm working on a custom kit with a friend of mine (2000 328Ci) they should be rolling out at the same time. I'll post the details later but I'm looking for 400 to the wheels early on - the engine has 90k miles on it as is, 8.5:1 pistons will probably be needed so it's possible that I could be looking at 450-480 to the wheels.
I've caught the bug, I need boost (and a fast car.) Watch out.

I suggest paying off your car first.

How much life do you think the engine will have after the add on?

It's got forged rods already.. I've heard of them getting 200k miles with no rebuild/stock internals so it should be fine if I lower the compression with new pistons, I'm not really worried. I'm going to hit my goal and not push the boost (or my luck.)

this is whats going to happen...

you gonna spend all this money and time on this car and its gonna Pop...
your looking for 400+ wheel horse power and your going to be pushing im guessing over 15psi. Your motor is not machined to handle to the extra stress of boost. you would need a forged crank rods and pistons along with new sleeves to run boost RIGHT in your motor... you have a nice all around car id hate to see it blown up because you slapped a turbo on it and ran to much boost or did not have the tuning with fuel, timing all just right and or the motor not built well enough to handle the extra stress... do ALOT of research before spending all this money.. the money you would spend to turbo you car id spend on the motor to have a machine shop hot tank it maybe open the water passages so you have proper cooling and id even have the head re done with bigger valves and atleast a 3 angle valve job just to flow the extra air other wise its just like taking a straw bending it in half and trying to blow through it.. compared to a straw you just stick in ur mouth and blow through. Im not saying dont turbo your car im just saying do the research and make sure you do it right so it dosent end up costing you alot more money down the road.

good luck

Jason..

I know you've got a lot of experience when it comes to forced induction stuff, but bimmers are a little different. I can hit 400 to the wheels with 9-11psi. It's been done with bone stock internals before, I'm just not going to risk it. I'd love to soak the engine though. It just depends how much I've got left over. The flow on my engine is extremily good, I know people hitting 350 to the wheels with the stock intake manifold.

We'll see, I'm doing an OBD1 conversion in the process, should get me another 50-75hp.
edit: a number of the components are forged from the factory (ie. rods) with 8.5:1 they are surprisingly strong.

How do you expect to get 180ish HP to the wheels with 11 psi? It sounds like a fun idea, but I must agree with Jason I don't think it will work...for long
