I believe it's squared - so 8k rpm's would put 64x the stress of 1k rpm on your engine.

i knew the S2K diff's were weak... but is the tranny itself weak too?

The tranny can withstand a lot more abuse than the diff, but it WILL fail if you feed it enough power

can it take similar abuse as a Type R tranny?

what can be done to it (short of replacing it) to beef it up?
cryo treating the gearset maybe?

I know of a couple that were cryo-treated but those guys were relatively easy on their cars anyway, so who knows if it helped. Other than that I don't know what else can be done. Most people concentrating on the diff and axles. When the guys making the big power start going through trannies, some better solutions will become available
