That's awesome. My dad is building an 81 GL1100. He has been working on it for a couple of months now. He bought it thinking it only needed a fuel pump. Bought the pump, replaced it, and started it up. Then it died and wouldn't start. The timing belt broke and munched the valves. It also sheared off the camshaft bolt that cranks the fuel pump. So he had to replace the camshaft too. After he fixed all that. He got it running to find the carburetors were all leaking. Instead of fucking around and rebuilding them he decided to go with a single carb setup. In between all this he stripped the bike down and painted the frame gloss black and the "tank" and engine flat black. He's working on the lights now. He's having a hard time figuring out how to mount 2 7" headlights side by side on the front. Dunno why he wants that but it's coming together slowly but surely.
I'm building two GL1000's.

He is but he sucks at forums. Doesn't seem to understand it's a database of info.Originally Posted by gnarlycharlie4u

Hey guys, saw there is quite a few people in here that have some older bikes so I figured why not post up. I recently acquired a 82 Kawasaki kz650, with a kz750 motor installed (no idea as to what model it is just yet, still doing some research). Anyone on here happen to have any hands on knowledge with them?
I already have a service manual for it and have joined a couple forums, however I was wondering if there was someone close that I might be able to get some answers from if I ever needed them, I would greatly appreciate this.
Also figured why not ask, anyone happen to have any Clip-on or clubman bars, or a spare slimmer "cafe" style tank that they might sell?
Thanks ahead of time
JT

clubmans can be had cheap online, and just pound knee dents in the tank.

If you think that's the truth I will smash your head in with a 3/4 face helmet.
See what you did there.Originally Posted by gnarlycharlie4u

Well I kind of figured you would be the man to talk to, however wanted to see if there was anybody else so I posted my question vs PMing you.
I know that is not all that goes into making a "cafe racer." I just like there smaller/slimmer tanks and that style handle bar setup, wanted to start with those two parts since they would make it look more presentable while I figure out what else I want to do looks wise. The tank that came with the bike was covered in fiberglass or bondo to make it look larger, so now it is cracking and crumbling in a quite a few places, so I think reshaping it fit me might be out of question.

if you're going to spend the money on a tank anyway... might as well take a crack at making your own first.
also, don't get a fiberglass tank. as tempting as it might be. first time someone pushes your bike over in a parking lot or you drop it or whatever... you're fucked.
I have a black set of clubman bars if you want.
Joey bought them and quickly changed his mind.
I was throwing around the idea of messing around with this tank, so I think I agree I might as well give it a shot. Gotcha on the fiberglass thank, I will stay as far away from them as possible.
Any particular reason he changed his mind on them so quickly? How much might you be willing to part with them for?
Also do you have any experience with a kz750? I have some questions about the clutch system.

My experiences with the KZ have been limited to taking a look and deciding I'd rather buy another Honda.Originally Posted by jt223539

But I'm sure there's not something so terribly different / difficult that I couldn't figure it out.
Joey's a BIG dude and they just weren't comfortable for him, he also didn't have rearsets, and it would have been IMPOSSIBLE for him to ride with his GF.
I'll ask him how much he wants for them.
Edit: he says whatever I can get for them I can keep... I'm gonna be nice and use that money to get him a set of brake pads.
sooooooo... lemme check the price on a cb750 puck and get back to you.
I'll be headed to newport news sometime soon if you wanna meet me there.
