Maximum tire width, on a properly sized wheel, with a reasonable alignment, without rubbing, and without fender modification is a proper fitting wheel/tire combo to me.
(properly sized running shoe)
Jen and Terry's new car is a perfect example of what it takes to stand out. The wheels are too aggressive for the car, but with an aggressive alignment and fender work they can be made to work and they look beautiful.
(like a one size too small high heel. Sorry honey they don't fit right, but they do make the whole package look better. Thumbs up for seckseeness)
That silly shit the VWs are doing is just..... silly.
(Clown shoe)
Like most things in life, just because a little bit is fun, doesn't make a whole lot... a whole lot better.

Oh damn, I couldn't see the pics from the first post at work. That shit is hideous. Wow.
As far as fitting maximum rubber for better performance, you don't want too much tire, so much that it hangs over the edge of the wheel, or you get too much sidewall flex during cornering. Great for dragging though.

I'm guilty of going 'too far' with fitment myself. Mine was a case of 'lack of proper suspension' (more like unavailability of proper suspension) on my Polo. 175/50-13s on 13X8s were pretty stretched and may have looked good if I coulda got the car down and tight BUT being a rare old euro import, it never happened as planned.
the culprit...

the victum...

now keep in mind it was being styled as an 80's lot racer in typical euro fashion BUT it never quite made it.

BTW... I don't give 2 shits about what ANYBODY says about VWs handling poorly... that car was the most insane handling car I've ever been behind the wheel in!! Even with the 1.1liter 50bhp mill and the too-short 4 speed with a max speed of 58mph, it would bring a smile to my face every time I drove it!!! Solid rear axle VWs may handle more quirky than IRS rides, but the axle doubles as a huge swaybar that really does it's job and makes for very predictible cornering. Get use to em and they will treat you good.
"Get use to 'em" and you're.... well you're just use to 'em. Doesn't mean they're doing their job any better.
You must read completely, to comprehend completely.
A big part of the reason why a lot of those cars are so extreme is because they are not allowed to modify the motor in many European countries, so they start doing really extreme things elsewhere to be unique. I do agree that a lot of times things get taken overboard and out of hand, but that's the way they do it. Half of you criticizing it are probably all over the nuts of anyone with a "VIP" styled car that has wheels sitting sideways when the car is lowered. lol...
