I have noticed myself doing that from time to time... I feel its just me being lazy to be honest; other than that I don't know why I do it.
Secondly i'll be the first one to tell you i'm too chicken shit to lean but so far. The last inch or so stays so fresh so clean... it makes me sad inside though.

I remember when I was afraid of the edge of the tire...
...now I love the lean!
I was skeptical about how far I could lean the knobbies on my XL but I might have 1/16'th of an inch of fresh tread on the outside knob. Got behind a 'Busa on Sandbanks road (anybody here on HRSB and/or familiar with that road?) going about 40 around the curves. I wish I had video of my buddy and me passing it on dual sports....

Ya... So im an epic fool took some of the tips and went out for a ride ... Three hours of great joy and then got scared and I fucked up again. Low sided the turn after braking the rear too hard and fixating on the ditch. Knew everything I was doing wrong WHILE i.was doing it and still did it any way WTF?!

Need a rear brake pedal. Sliders did their job until it went in the ditch. Scrached up the plastics and what not; nothing bad but bad enough that ill be kicking myself for a while.
