I didn't give it the respect it deserved until it scared the Sh*t out of me one night when i get a little too cocky for it. I think thats the determining factor. A 250 or a 1000 can hurt you all the same. A bike will respect you as long as you respect it. Once you stop respecting it, then it will hurt you. As far as what bike to get its all up to what YOU likeand what your pocket can afford. I personally am just getting back into bikes after a long hiatous and am starting with an 04 R6. i don't suggest this unless you buy it outright. I called on insurance, for me 28 yrs old, been driving since i was 16 no tickets no accidents, and progressive wanted $7k a yr......The cheapest i found it for was 2.8k a year. This was for full coverage(because the bike was financed). I asked the insurance rep why and he said that statistics show they will pay out on this bike within 6 months(like some have said on here). So just something else to think about when looking for a bike. $7k a YEAR....For christs sake i have paid more in insurance in 2 years than i did for the bike
try State Farm,Progressive(Sp), and USAA

Dude; you've got the wrong idea here.

Don't get pissed at me 'cause I'm giving the advice that I happen to think is correct. If you wanna tell someone to ride butt naked with their hair on fire down the freeway doing 150mph as their first ride ever on a bike than that's up to you.

But that's not what you said. You said (something to the effect of) don't get anything smaller than a 600 (non katana) or you will get bored with it after a while.

You're absolutely correct in that statement. But that doesn't negate the fact that a newbie shouldn't be starting off on a brand new R6. If that's what YOU did then that's all well and good, but don't go reccomending it to others or you'll get called on it.

This isn't a car here we're talking about. No seat belts, no air bags. Just you, a motor and two wheels with nothing but air and opportunity for cars to ruin your day.

And hell, when you have kids are gonna give your son a freakin' VIPER on his 16th birthday?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!? You think he can handle it? Or maybe, just MAYBE you'll have him start driving something a little more tame.

I've been riding since 92 on the street. No offroad time for me. And I'm giving the advice I feel is correct.

Don't take it out on me.

As for insurance; I feel your pain. I think I stated it in another thread but I'll abbreviate it here.

Get yourself some older POS bikes for literally nothing and insure them with minimal liability for Va. I am currently insuring 4 bikes; even though I only ride one of them right now.

I get a 10% discount for the WHOLE policy per every bike I insure if it's more than one. So because I have a crap record Progressive wants to charge me X amount of money full coverage on the F4. So I insure 3 other bikes that are pretty old and/or smaller cc's to get the nice discounts.

Trust me, my policy was pretty much cut in half.

Raise your deductible.

Oh ya, and don't wreck it after you raise it!!!!!

There's TONS of other stuff that can seem mundane but actually make a HUGE difference in the overall policy price.

Where and how you store it.

How many miles a year you told them you'd put on it.

Recreational use only?

Alarm or disc lock?

yadda yadda...................................

Not what I meant; re-read what I posted earlier.

Go buy yourself a couple 200 a piece 1980 whatever Nighthawk 250's and throw them on your insurance with liability only on them. They will lower your overall policy price by 10% a piece.

So say you're paying 2000 for one brand new bike. Add two 1982 nighthawk 250's with liability only for 200 a piece. That would be 2400. Now take off 10% per the WHOLE policy price for your multi bike discount.

Now you're only paying 1980 vice the 2000. Not much of a discount in this scenario but you get my point. I'm telling you, I cut my policy in half adding more bikes to it. If I remove them my policy will actually go up!!!!
