There's plenty of ways to do it.
For heavy grease I start with a cold or cool engine. NEVER SPRAY COLD WATER ON HOT SHIT.
I've tried soaking with cleaners letting it run, and letting it steam up in there. That's also a great way to easily clean.

i honestly get in there with a rag and tire shine. sounds weird but it works wonders for me. good ole elbow grease. it sucks the first time then just wipe it down every other week or so and it stays clean

brake cleaner fried an alternator once upon a time...or maybe it was carb cleaner.. just be careful where u spray stuff on/into
