from a sales person point of view if someone said that to me i'd tell them to take a fucking hike, even if they wanted to buy. Unless they can't sell cars for shit and will be reduced to anything to get a sale.

when buying a car from a dealership the dealer is gonna make a profit plain and simple. You are there to buy, and they are there to sell. But most of the time, the dealerships dont make THAT much money. Mark ups on subarus is about 7%, which is some of the lowest compared to chevy which is about 10-12%. Compare that to other products like clothes and furniture which can be marked up anywhere from 100% to 250%. And the whole quota thing is funny. As it does make a difference, not every dealership ends at the end of the month, where i work we start over about a week into each month.

But as far as negotiating, which is the fun part I can give you a couple of tips.

When I was looking to buy my truck it was priced at $21,900. I told him I was nowhere near comfy paying that for it because of... and I listed a few small reasons. We got the price down 18,500 @ 4.9% So I was pretty happy with that. Well the next day I went back to finish paper work and pick it up, but somehow they couldnt get me that APR. So We negotiated more. Now mind you, they already had my trade in sold to someone. Well long story short I got the price of the truck down to $15,900 and another $1000 on my trade in.

Thanks for all the advice I'm prolly heading out to the dealerships after work today if it doesn't rain too hard. Unfortunately I don't think import dealerships will cust prices like the domestics but I'll post an update if I do make a purchase and hopefully I'll get a killer deal

I learned that buying from a dealership works best,If you have cash in hand. When I say cash in hand,I mean either actual cash or write a check for however much you want to pay for the car you want.Walk into the dealership, pick a salesmen, hand him/her the check and tell him which car you want.If the price is reasonable you will be driving out of the dealership with your new ride in no time at all.If they don't like the price then I am sure they're more dealerships in town.My mom used this method when she bought her mercedes s500,I'm now sure how much it's worth but she picked hers up for 29'989.I was amazed at this so I tried it when I went to buy my first new car.I picked up my infiniti g35 fully loaded with the 6 speed for 21'495. So just try it out.

find the number you want to pay... then start lower than that and work your way up to what you actually want to pay.

the best time to get a car is when gas prices are up and sales are down. like i work at a dealership they will try and sell you anythingbecause atm the sales are dead. but go towerd more the end of the month because as you said the sales men are trying to make a bigger profit. at the beginning of the month it doesnt matter because the month isyoung but wait until mid month. or wait until next july when the year is up for that stuff and get one because they are trying to clear the lot. and cash is best.
