new phones have locks on them to prevent them from being used when stolen, but in my case i just need a code to use a nextel sim card.

Nextel phones can not be unlocked, unlocking/locked phones only applies to GSM phones. (T-mobile and Cingular are the two major US GSM providers).

Unlike CDMA phones (Verizon and Sprint), where the network information is programmed into the phone, GSM phones use a removable chip aka, simcard.

This feature allows you to easily switch phones and lets you use your phone overseas (most countries in the world use GSM). Not to mention, you can also use buy some cool phones from Asia that never make it to the US, like Samsung's 5mp cameraphone with 3x optical zoom.

Cell phones are locked by the carriers, not the manufacturer's. Thats how Cingular and T-mobile can offer great deals on phones, by locking them.

Now, lets say you have a Cingular branded locked RAZR. If you get the phone unlocked you can use it on any GSM provider (T-mobile, Vodafone....etc)

hope this helps.
