Altoght it CAN cause problems, it is safe to do so in certain cases. You can run with no filter. All the filter does is prevent FOD from getting in the motor and hurting something. If you are wondering about doing so at the dyno, track, etc. it is perfectly safe to do. On the street and in any environment where dust, or anything has the possibility to get into the engine bay, i would have a filter on.

welcome to dragva. everybody sucks.

Personally, I would never say it's "perfectly safe" to run without a filter.. be it on a dyno, the drag strip, in the garage at home, etc... lol. My motto is "If something can go wrong, it WILL go wrong!"

So a filter that doesn't filter? Uh...
Yeah, sooo I think you're totally confused. That filter looks like a "M" in cross section, there is no open area, it's all filter element. You're just not seing the whole thing.

Through the magic of MSPaint, I've done a cross sectional view of the filter in the picture you posted. I wasn't going to spend more than 3 minutes on this so no one laugh.. Notice how the middle of the filter is blocked off, so air that goes into the center still gets filtered?
