I'm of the belief that wearing a seatbelt alone is more than adaquate and the benefits of having an airbag don't outweigh the risks as long as you always buckle up. I'd love to see some data (where seatbelt + airbag did better than a seatbelt only) to the contrary though. That's not even taking into consideration a more advanced restraint system.

How old was the car?

Newer generations of airbags are more effective and FAR safer than the late '80s-mid '90s airbags.

If I had an airbag in an early '90s car I'd take it out immediately, regardless of the law.

you can personally do it, but there is the standard red tape shit to go through to legally do it. you have to write the NTHSB to get a release application, and if you have a legitimate reason for it, they will issue you a release form, and then you can have it done.

or just yank the bulb and all traces of an airbag system off of it

Well since my car is a '91 volvo and the only airbag is in the steering wheel, I figure if I did it noone would give it a second look.

one of my friend's dad that does inspections told me a while ago that you can only fail the airbag safety inspection if your SRS light is on. Remove the bulb and you should be set.

thats for inspection, not the federal law that prevents tampering. you can try to get away with it without the paperwork, but like all government runn shits, it might come back to get ya. i wouldnt do the paperwork myself, but it is a good idea in case of an accident or something in this litigation happy society.

This is a very serious question.

Do you think a officer of the law will write you a ticket for a "altered" steering wheel? Just wondering. I've been tosing the idea around about getting rid of my airbag, I hate it, I'm scared of it. And getting a different wheel. Thanks.

Not that this is worth anything, but when I got pulled for having expired tags on my plates I also got a ticket because my horn wasn't hooked up on my Sparco steering wheel at the time. I didn't even have the horn button installed at all (there was a big hole in the steering wheel) because it was sitting in my center console. So he definitely noticed the steering wheel. However, just because I didn't get any tickets doesn't mean you won't.

If you get pulled it's 50/50 whether you'll get a ticket because of the steering wheel, just know that you can get one so don't complain if you do.
