I was looking for a TDI when I got my Jetta.. didn't find any that fit me or else I would definately like to have gotten the TDI since gas is expensive. I heard they aren't that bad to maintain.
only thing i would change is the cd player....nothing else...no mods....i want a good...solid car...not a ford wagon......and i want something thats not going to swallow gas....
iam going to get an estimite on insurnace tomrow
and what does TDI stand for ?
My girlfriend has a '99 Jetta TDI and its a pretty nice car. She and her sister drive that thing around on empty constantly but they've never run out of fuel. I'd say that it gets close to 50mpg on the highway and probably mid to high 30's around town. The first time I got to drive it I was pretty surprised at how quick it was off the line. I know diesels have a lot of torque but I was still impressed with it for only being 1.9l, not to mention they make performance chips for them which add even more torque. You've got to give it a little time to warm up on cold mornings but other than that they're pretty sweet as far as daily drivers go.

Oh and Maintenance is pretty hefty if its, 20k, 40k, 60k, 100k Maintenance.
40k being 585$ thru the dealership.
Damn.....btw...i talked to the dealer down here....you also got the 80k timing belt change......which you cannot do yourself as the damn stainless lines run through the timing belt meaning you have to discharge and re-charge your ac-lines........got a quote for 700-900 bucks to have the damn belt changed
but i've heard they run forever...

I can tell you anything you need to know about a TDI...
I've actually been considering getting one. There's a mechanic at Salem Imports with a Caddy TDI (pick-up truck) that had 500,000+ miles on it as of a few years ago, and I've heard it's still running strong... on the original transmission, motor, etc.

May I suggest checking out this guy's homepage. His name is Scott and owns a '98 Jetta TDI in the Tidewater area. He has a great deal of knowledge when it comes to TDI's and may be a good place to start researching. He's also an avid auto-crosser and all around VW enthusiast.

There is even a contact page if you want to get in touch with him if you have any questions. I'm sure he would be happy to answer.

sadly it wouldnt save me any $ as my insruance would go from 95 a month to 135 a month
