There is a difference between detonation caused by ignition timing and low fuel levels..

Higher octane fuel is more likely to fix the former problem

sorry to say it but detonation is detonation. even though theres numerous ways for it occur it still is the gas being pre ignited. the only way around it solve the source of the pre ignition, whether it be a lean fuel mix or an advanced timing curve, _or_ add a variable to the mix, in this case higher octane fuel. and since the rest of the variables are unknown to anyone here, seems to me that simply adding a higher resistance to the detonation in question is the temporary answer.

Exactly. The first step in solving he problem is to find the cause of the problem. Fixing it is easy..
Without any info about what engine and what mods though, it's a crapshoot..

lol, first of all detonation and pre-ignition are two different things..

detonation can LEAD to pre-ignition.

sorry, but higher octane fuel is no fix for the problem, temporary or not.

I'm not gonna waste my time trying to argue with you guys when you can look it up..

why dont you offer some advice rather than tell us how wrong we are.

You guys were the ones saying I was wrong, lol, how are you gonna turn that around on me?!

If its detonating its gonna obviously be a fuel, timing, or overheating issue, everyone already knows this..

I don't think anyone can guess the problem with the information he gave us which was basically (no offense) "I have detonation, help me fix it."

What motor? Any mods? Swapped? Original ECU? Any changes before the problem? bla bla bla..

Garn is correct guys. Detonation and Preignition are 2 different things. Preignition is when the mixture ignites before the spark plug fires. It can be caused by such things as running too hot of a spark plug, hotspots in the cylinder, too low of octane, etc.

What kind of car is this and what engine managment? Also why exactly do you think you are detonating? It makes a very distinct sound...not like an explosion or anything, but more like bb's in a can. If you can actually audibly hear the detonation while you are inside the car driving then you had better fix it quick because that is no good at all. First of all you need to hook up a wideband and make sure you aren't leaning out. If you are boosted AFR's in the 11.5-12.0:1 area will be fine. If after that you are still detonating then timing seriously needs to be adressed. Or like others said maybe you need a higher octane fuel, but i bet if you are running the normal 93 octane pump gas and arent making any serious power then your issue lies in the tune.

No one is saying he's wrong, at least not that I saw..
We're (or at least me) trying to say that there isn't enough info on cause or engine setup to give a solution..

Yea I agree. Not enough info at all. I guess I was responding more to allmotorSOHC who said the gas is being preignited which isn't necessarily true.

Another VERY important thing to know would be is it happening at low load or full throttle? or both?
