I've had one of my old business cards over my VIN since I've had the car. Old news.

they can cut a key to open the door(valet key) but it wont start the car and you can always trace who cut the key b/c i know on newer hondas/acuras you need a key code that you get from the honda interactive network

Thats not true for all cars. There's some new Toyotas that you can cut a key for and it will start the car. I've had keys cut at work to move cars before. Also think about it, is the theif gonna do this for a car that needs a special key or a car that doesn't? If he knows to go this route, he probably already knows which cars he can get and which he can't.

Well sorry to waste your time for all of you who knew this. I never thought of covering my vin but I will now. I was just trying to help out some people who didn't know about it. And i'm sure there are dealerships that will cut a key without asking for all the info......Just like cashiers are supposed to ask for ID when you use a credit card. How many times does that happen?

I understand the first two, but the last two? If you get your keys locked into your car...how are you gonna have the car present? What if you don't own a passport?

I lost the keys to my MKIV Supra back when I first bought it, and it was not that big of a hassle to get the single key cut from Toyota using my VIN. I did need the bill of sale and my ID, but that's easy to get around, IMO. It is scary. Luckily there is a log of someone doing it so you cna check the locsal delerships and see if you have had a key cut lately for your VIN.

Good post.

Well It doesnt have to be a passport, it can be a military id.. goverment id.. anything with a second photo for verification..

Car has to be present due to Sidewinder keys being a bitch to cut. and even if u do it w/laser u still have to make refinements to the key as it isnt perfect all the time..

and also i can charge an hour labor hahaha
