A wideband doesn't have much to do with timing except that you should be setting fuel first. You can beat your head into a wall setting timing and the engine will still run like shit if you haven't addressed the fuel maps. Start with something conservative for timing, then focus on fuel. Then go back and tweak the timing more. If you're this new to tuning, I would only tune it to the point where you can take it to someone more experienced, and look over their shoulder. Tuning from scratch for your first tuning project is ambitious at best, catastrophic at worst.

Good luck with that man. I wish I was in Hawaii so I can see the process in the tuning.

grrr, yeah I'm not having any luck getting a signal for the timing light. Any tips?

I tried hooking the timing light up to the signal wire for the coil, and I also pulled the coil, plugged it into a conventional spark plug wire, and then plugged that wire in the spark plug. I hooked into that and...no signal. What the hell?

That was my point, there is no spark plug wire because it's a coil on plug motor. I'm not TAT much of a newb.

Anyway, I figured it out. I got the timing gun to read off of the power (not signal) to the coil and checked it from there. Everything is meshed now and I drove it for the first time today. I've got it idling rock steady with a 13.7ish:1 a/f ratio and about 9dbtc of timing. I'm still VERY rich at anything but idle and I'm only running around with my base timing of 15dbtc. I'm going to lower my PW on the injectors and increase the idle offset to keep the mid 13s a/f at idle and lean it out across the board tomarrow. I'll also move my base timing to somewhere between 25 and 30dbtc and and set it up to decrese 1.5 degrees for every 1psi of boost. That'll have me at a max of 15dbtc at 10psi and still up in the mid 20dbtc range under no load.

Sound like a decent place to start or do one of you guys have some suggestions?

Hey,

What size engine is it? bore/stroke?

I have several timing maps I can give you for similar engines..

2.8l VR6. I'm not sure about the bore and stroke off hand, but I think I got it about pinned. I'm going to put in what I said in the above post for a base map, and I'll just fine tune from there.

that's what worked the best for me max boost at 15 deg using pump gas. have you set the part throttle or cruise you can run the timing up to 40deg
