get the powerstroke diesel.
I just bought a exursion diesel and I am getting 20 mpg highway. And I will get about 16 highway towing a 5000 pound trailer.

I get 15/16 around town. It holds 44 gallons of fuel.

Cummins is a great engine but the dodge tranny is junk. (period)!!!

if you are looking at at new GM has the best trans but I think that ford and dodge have the better engine.

For reliabilty and cost ford is the best way to go. New or Used!!!

Honestly it is hard to find a deal on a diesel so if you find one buy it and don't think twice because it will be gone.

i would strongly recomend that you do not buy the 6.4L when it first comes out. Ford never has good luck with the first year of an engine. The 03 6.0 was a clear example of this. if you are looking for a truck to lift and go big with i would go with the ford or dodge(solid front axle). IMO the chevy is the best to tow with i owned a 04 powerstroke and an 05 duramax and the chevrolet was much nicer to tow with. ford gives youa tow haul mode with their torque shift transmission but you cannot cancel overdrive. sometimes this leaves the transmission (searching) for gears when towing on a grade. the allison transmission that comes with the duramax allows tow haul, overdrive cancel or both to be used at the same time.

thats more of the type of info im looking for.

im still leaning towards the ford 7.3 though just because i like the body stylings of the 98ish f250'sand the fact the if/when i do tow it will be once or twice a week tops and thats on a good week.

if you buy a 7.3 L powerstroke it is equiped with the 4R100 transmission and you will likely need to put a new one in at around 135k miles. unless the truck has been absolutely babied and not lifted ect.

The dodge tranny is in fact a piece of shit although cummins is one of the best diesel engines on the market, chevy and ford are all around good trucks but dont have quite as much power as the dodge

The 6.4l is a pretty much a cat engine kinda like the 7.3 and the international with a 2 stage turbo NOT TWIN it should make a great engine in fords application. the 2 stage turbo should make up for any turbo lag and TONS of boost i think its gonna be a awesome enginebif you got any questions on diesels let me know i work at a diesel shop and build these engines ~Joe~

The best thing about the cummins is great hp/tg and less movin parts because it is a inline 6. but i would stick with the 7.3 power stroke Fords best engine and its very durable and powerful the transmission is not shit my buddy's tow truck (7.3)has 410,000 miles and its an automatic it shifts perfect. like any car except a pinto as long as you maintain it it will last

that is not very good advice. surely if you work in a diesel shop. you realize the problems many people have the the 4R100. I am sure that there are some out there with tons of mlieage on them that still work fine, but that does not change the fact that many of these are failing in the mid 100k mileage range. if he buys a 7.3 he will be buying a used truck and likely a higher mileage truck, the "maitenance" will be unknown. i still think that the 7.3 would be a great choice for the money. there are lots of them out there and if you look hard enough you can afind a good deal. just be knowledgeable about potential problems.
