well id mainly do it for the excercise really, but the bigger the adventure the bigger the exercise ^^
but i am not very well educated in it yet, just a sport i want to get into..maybe u can help me pick one out.

just for exercise then hit up the postrader for a used one, ll bean has some decent ones that go on sale from time to time. Id say you shouldnt have to spend a lot, maybe 220ish for the kayak, then 60 or so for the paddle and then the lifevest but thats all bargain new, but you can get all of this cheaper
not familiar with huntington park , i've done some rough sections with my lil exploring kayak "escapade" not big dollar or anything and got it from ll bean.
+1 learn how to do some eskimo rescues/rolls out on the lake before you try going anywhere with a current.
I think a lot of people look at places like the James River or York River and don't realize how deep it's been dredged out over the years to accommodate large military ships. You get some nasty rip currents where two bodies of water meet or the depth changes dramatically.
Not to say that it can't be Kayaked but I wouldn't want my first outting to be in a place with that kind of depth & current.
