In school I was tought that you should be able to flip it half way around.
Now if you think it's super tight you may like somewhere wear something out faster than its supposed to. Last thing you want is too much tension on that cam gear and crank pulley.

the belt would go before anything else, you couldn't hurt the bearings. but the water pump maybe.
That isn't true at all. the 3.8, 3.6, 3.1 and 2.8 gms motors had main bearing problems becuase the timing belt would cause them too much pressuer and burn them out. By the way never buy any older car with this motor!
