Yea, I don't think I'm comfortable with the drive by wire either, but none the less, the 07 R1 and R6 are sweet bikes and I may get one despite the drive by wire. Any idea how hard it/expensive it would be to convert it back to a conventional throttle (if even possible). I'm definitely not a bike mechanic by any means so I wouldn't really know.

Also, still would like to have some more opinions from people that have had personal experience riding the 07 R1, R6 and the 600R.

Any idea if you can still float the valves (engines peak limitation; peak RPM causing extremely loud and fast revs turning everyones head in a 5 mile range )? Basically, I'm trying to figure out how much control the bike has over me. Thanks for your help man.

pretty much every bike out right now will never have a problem with valve float on a stock motor. they're plenty capable of revving a little higher than the limiter would even let them. i wouldn't even be concerned about that. valve float is only a concern if you have a cam/valvespring setup that won't let the valve close fast enough at high rpm. trust me, i have plenty of experience with valve float and the damage it causes,

and the only real difference with the fly-by-wire that you may notice is a slight lag when pulling away from a light real fast. it's nothing horrible, but it was a lil annoying to me. it just felt like the stepper motor that controls the throttle bodies would react a little slow. it was ONLY noticable when trying use alot of throttle pulling away from a light.

Lol...Looks like you went a little crazy on your valve floating lol..more than a about two seconds probably isn't smart but i bet it was fun.

But anyway, I'm wondering how much of a bother that that little bit of lag would be to me. I think it would piss me off.

Thanks for your info! I'm sure I'll have more questions soon. Speaking of which...

I like the exhaust on the R1 because it goes under the seat instead of being on the side(s) of the bike. However, does it cause extra heat on the seat or more heat on a second rider?

maybe a lil bit in the middle of the summer. alot of bikes have undertail exhausts now, they're pretty well shielded from the factory. the worst part is the severe lack of trunk space. i thought about building an undertail setup for my 954, but as it is right now i can fit a pair of jeans and a t-shirt in my trunk, and i kinda like that, so the side mount stays.

honestly i don't think most people would notice any issues with the throttle on the new r1. i'm probably just overly picky.

that piston was from an early 90's oil cooled gsxr750 motor that used to be in my old streetfighter. at the time i was running a katana 600 cdi with it, which has a higher redline. i missed a shift and spun it up waaaay past redline, valves hit pistons, snapped the heads of the valves off and they bounced around the cylinder for a second or two, and got forced back up the intake ports, bent the hell out of the rods, destroyed the cylinder head, etc. fun fun. after that i decided i was done playing with old 750's and i shoved a 1200 motor in it (with a dyna ignition so i could set my out ignition curve and redline)

it's not really that i "don't like it", i just prefer the tried and true way that it's been done for years. i don't see any advantage of a fly-by-wire throttle. now, the variable length intake stacks, i can see how and why that would be an advantage. i'm all for making things work better, but adding all kinds of techno gadgetry like that throttle without making any improvement is a waste of time and effort. i guess maybe if it was programmable to you could ramp the throttle, or make it more or less sensitive to inputs, then there may be an advantage, but as far as i know, you can't change the programming for it....yet. i'm sure someone will come up with some sort of a way to do it.

Why the ZX10 and not the R1?
