1985 ninja 1000cc
If you asked me a 900 with a 1000 motor stuffed into it from 85 is going to be more of a headache and money pit then anything else. I think you should just bide your time and save your money until you can buy something that you are truely going to be happy with and will not be a maintenance nightmare. Do not rush into purchasing a bike just because you want one and even out of your apparent necessity it will most likely come back and bite you in the ass. Have you taken an MSF class or know how to ride currently?
Seriously, you need to take the advice of some of the guys here on the board, spending the least amount of money is not good for you in the end, you get what you pay for. I am telling you, and you really should wait till you are 100 percent confident on the purchase and it aint gonna kill you to save for another few months and possibly have another 1200 or 1500 to spend on a bike.
a 25 year old 1000 doesn't have the power to just flip over from flipping the throttle. that, and the fact that they are HEAVY. liter bikes that old barely made 100hp stock. the fact that that particular bike has a 1000 motor in it even though it's a 1000 doesn't mean much. the 900 and the 1000 motors are almost identical.
btw "standard" is a typre of motorcycle. not a cruiser, not a sportbike, just a regular bike.bike's like old honda cb's, yamaha xs's, etc. google "UJM" and i'm sure you'll get all kinds of info on what i'm referring to by "old jap standards".
in any case, good luck with your search for a decent $600 bike. it's possible, but you're going to be doing alot of searching.

Goodlook finding a decent bike w/that budget. I had a hard time finding a bike under $2k. Keep an eye out on criagslist.org and try to get your budget to at least $1500. I see a few F2's going for around that. O and I'm in college too, so i understand the budget...but you can do better than 600.

YA i was looking at this bike the guy sent me pictures, the bike is in awful condition. At least looks that way, no seat so all the internals are all over the place, the fairings are off, the head lights off the speedo, etc. Thats a year long project bike. I found another biek thats in great condition, but he's only willing to go down to 800 bucks... I'm thinking of picking it up.
Get a yamaha xj600 perhaps?
Just picked my seca II up, a '93 with 10000 miles for 1600. They're dead reliable, and great to learn on.
I'm sure you could find one in lesser condition for a good bit under 1000.
