I'm gonna tell you now... if you run 17's with a +38 or lower offset, then lower it more than 1.8 inches.... your tires will rub against the outer edge of your fender well... I'm speaking from experience.... i ruined my 2-3 month old front tires then....

as long as the car was not to low it never rubbed. i also put the wilwood brake kit on my civic that had 4 pot calipers and a 12.19 inch rotor and the 17 inch rim helped clearance issues. i hoped this helped.
old team loco's. I remember those! BTW a 40mm off set is fine as well. Thats prob what they are. the question is, how is your car lowered?

in 205/40/17 is the 40 the offset?or is offset something to do w/ the rim not tire? yea my cars not lowered at all its stock and i figured i wouldn't lower it. so hmmwhats the worst that will happen if it rubs? if it does rub what simple mods can i do to stop it.

The 40 is the tires profile in relation to its width. It has nothing to do with the offset. Google "wheel offset" and you will find your answer. If you just trying to get wheels for the hell of putting on wheels, don't worry about it. You should only worry about offset if you're concerned about having your wheel flush or not.

No, the 40 refers to the tire's section height (sidewall aspect ratio). In this case, the tire has a tire section height of 4.03 inches. Most of the 17" wheels that come in a 4x100 bolt pattern are made in a 40 offset. The offset is usually stamped on the inside of the rim on one of the spokes or on the mounting face.

What are the rims that you are wanting to put on the car?

they are team loco's, the car was lowered 2.5 inches on coil over sleeves. that was the max it could go down. i lowered it so many time before i found the lowest i could have it. let me put it this way, at 2.75 inches it would rub. 2.5 was the lowest i could put it and have it not rub at all. even when i hit a bad bump it wouldn't rub. i have had it lowered from 1 - 4 inches so if you have any questions let me know. i kept mine at 2.5 because it was the best to keep my tires aligned with out a camber kit.
