short shifter?
It changes the fulcrum points of the lever, reducing the time and distance needed to complete a gear-to-gear shift. M/T's are regarded as slow in all out drag racing using .XX sec to shift, one way to reduce the time is a short shifter. That's also why you see built A/T's in most sub 10 sec. cars that can pull .0X sec. shifts.
Like CatfSSh said, shure you can get a $15 "short shifter" off ebay, that will do crap to reduce the throw length, or get a real B&M for a higher price and get actual results.

Get a quality one and don't worry about it.
I've owned two b&m shifters and they rattled around 55-65 mph. I've owned a Skunk2 one aswell and prefer that one but the B&M units are half the price of the Skunk2 one.
I'm guilty of bangin' gears like I'm tryin' to break the shifter off (
) and I've never broke one of those. I did however break a ebay unit at Hertford.
