Surfing....
This is going to sound stupid, but it works. I helped give some lessons in florida at my buddies shop and have been surfing for a while. Practice on the beach...paddling and standng up. If you dont want to do it there, in your backyard...bedroom wherever. Go through all the motions and get really comfy popping up. Try and remember to bring your knee to your chest and not swing your leg around. Sounds stupid but it gets 7 year old girls to stand up there first time surfing.
edit. Def watch guys in the line up. Your new, there not. Localism sucks but you have to earn your place in a line up. Esp someplace where surfing is few and far between. aka vabeach. In the outer banks in the more popular spots it can get bad, but chances are you can always find an empty place to learn. You might even run into a couple of pro's. There all cool and normally will give you advice.

I live down at the oceanfront and I am at either 49th, 79th, or 5th almost everyday. Pm me and we can get up and go sometime and I can try and help you out (i taught 3 of my friends and my 2 cousins)...but what size board do you have and how tall and how much do you weigh?
By any chance would you have been out at like 4th street on sunday morning around 8-9?
No dont wait in the wash because you will wind up getting hit. Especially dont do that down at 1st...people can and will be dicks. I would start out around maybe 40th-60th street. Theres a nice sandbar there and not to crowded.....
