You could have an alternator bearing problem, it may not be the belt at all..

Dang, beat me to it by 2 minutes.

Take the alt to your local parts store and have them bench test it. (look and listen for irregularities)

Be sure to check for shaft play as well

bingo...

"tight as hell" is not very ideal, you will kill the bearing in the alt....not to mention, stressing seals/bearings on the crankshaft if your the hulk.

thanx guys. it only does it every now and then. its not a full time thing. it will do it say every 10 mins
