Yeah I always thought they used a Hollinger in their race cars. Turns out they were using a Hollinger in their Speed World Challenge car, but the EMCO for the GT2 car.

Yes... it's for leverage and to have it right by the steering wheel. When road racing the more time you have both hands on the wheel the better. The shifter placement allows you quickly go back and forth. At the end of the 2nd video posted it explains this.

The clutch is enguaged electronically. It shares the same manual transmission in a manual M3. I still have to shift like shown above. You can set the shift speed you want it to from 1-6 speeds. 6 being instantaniously fast but harder on the clutch when shifting. I can still stall out if I roll back too far in first gear and too far forward in reverse. Throttle response takes some time to get used to. If you dont put enough gas or too much gas the car will bog.
