opening up a can of worms there for the believers and non-believers of motorcycle specific oil. its been debated for years hence my retarded 'canola oil response'

same with synthetic / non synthetic stuff

Thanks for the responses guys. I was reading about the debates on the pros and cons of auto vs motorcycle the other day at work and it's about time for an oil change so figured I'd see what "the locals" are using. I'll have to peep out that Rotella jankies.

Oh, I know. It's just easier for me and my location to get auto oil because the nearest shop that I know of selling motorcycle oil is like 15 more miles away, and sometimes I'm lazy.

energy conserving oils/auto oil contains molly which will cause pre-mature clutch failure. rotella synthetic does not have the molly additive and has better wear properties than most oils due to its classification. i use it in my atvs, cars, truck and in my motorcycle when i had it. you can tell a difference in the motor if you ever open one up that runs rotella.

I've heard as long as you dont get the "energy saving" auto oil, you can run automotive oil in your bike just fine. Who knows, I run motorcycle oil just to be safe though.

the simple answer, its a friction modifier. your energy conserving oils have this additive.

yes. it has excelent lubricity and wear characteristics. diesel oils are subject to much higher stresses than typical oils since its designed to be put under the extreme pressures that diesel fuel injectors require and the high heat.

yeah, from what i've heard, the added stuff in auto oil, like friction modifiers...etc, wont play nice with the wet clutch. On all motorcycle oils, you'll see the JASO rating on the back, so look for that and you should be ok, from there, you'll want to decide if you want to use synthetic or not.
