Just because someone has a certain setup doesn't mean you should too.

on our LT1s you cant completely gut the distributor. a coil pack conversion still requires the distributor for optical signals. and guess where the distributor is located.... behind the water pump and harmonic balancer! yay!

yea thats what it would be in a normal sequential system. the LT1 was destined to be fucked from the factory. in an LT1 the pcm knows the position of the camshaft because of a low resolution pulse from the optispark (distributor) if you just use a crank trigger, the PCM only receives about half of the information needed to fire the injectors and spark plugs properly. theres an assload of people working to get around the optispark but i dont think there is an in-the-box package to replace it. you can eliminate the shitty part of the optispark (high voltage side) by doing the coil pack conversion. however the pcm still needs the opti to make correct decisions. the opti is one of the weakest links on LT1s, if you get it wet, get ready for a tear down. its not cheap either, retail its around $450 wholesale its still around $200 and you get to tear the fucker down to the timing cover.
Gotcha.
Seems kinda silly to go through all that work with the ignition and not just go full standalone though

no you dont. you have CAM ANGLE SENSOR or cas. feeds off the timing chain which has slack and tension changes.
