They can take it from you, but usually don't. Both times I was caught with one, I was just given a ticket.
If you buy a good one (V1, BEL Vector 985, Escort Passport), the cops will not be able to trace it. I just sold mine.

you get cought because radar detectors put out a singnal as well to detect the cop's signals.
when i used to live in MD my dad's would pick up other ppls as we passed them.
if you don't wanna get caught get the V-1. it has an auto cut off feature so it stops sending signals.
