That sounds like really soft or damaged transmission or engine mounts. Probably really soft, so there isn't any NVH transmitted into the chassis. Normal people don't really notice or care if the engine is attached to the chassis with marshmallows.
My money is on this. I went through several sets of engine/trans mounts on my 02 GTI.
