Satellite Radio has been on 3/5 cars i've had...and i've never used it. Are you absolutely certain you'll use it enough to not just go the cell phone/bluetooth method?
That's a valid question, but it would be more expensive to ratchet up my data plan and still have to pay for the Sirius access for the phone also. The satellite receiver is the cheaper way to go considering the monthly cost of the data plan. I'm really getting a head unit for the rest of the features (USB connectivity, Bluetooth, etc.), and will probably get something that has an add-on Sirius receiver available just in case I decide to go that route.
I'd much rather run sirus over pandora. You can run the antenna to the rear deck and attach it the top of your c post. I've seen a lot of people do that.
All I see are the stupid little magnetic or adhesive mount external puck antennas with a cable that has to be run into the car. Does anyone make a better, more attractive option than this for Sirius receivers?

We have been having this discussion on a MINI board I am on. . . from the best I understand, there is a "Shark-fin" style that is out/coming out/available for BMW, and it may be a matter of retrofitting it to an existing car. I don't know the wiring schematics involved, or anything along the technical side(wiring and what have you)that I'm sure you would have a solid grasp of, but I can pass along the info if you like.
I know you know what they look like:
All the wiring is done, and run through the rear glass molding, from what I understand. . . I would have thought, like the old XM Radio, Sirius would have much better options than the puck. It's not like they are new, or just coming into the satellite radio game.
I don't like seeing them either. I put one under the trim on top of the package tray in my Mustang and under the cowl on my F250. I haven't had any reception issues with those locations.

I assume the vehicle youre installing it on is not pre-wired for satellite? if that is the case, youre pretty confined to the magnetic antennas as your options. Luckily, as long as youre not worried about having some momentary interruptions from time to time, you can install the antenna on the front or back dash. As long as it has a decent line of sight to the sky you can get away with it. Under a plastic wiper cowl would probably work pretty well as long as it isnt under metal. Newer wranglers have their factory Satellite antenna mounted on top of the factory "roll bar" that is covered by the fiberglass hard top.
The through-the-glass antennas werent very reliable due to improper installations and moisture getting in past the seals. They were also ugly, affectionately called Dildo antennas. As small as the magnetics have gotten, they usually arent an issue for the normal, non-car aficionado.
