The caliper should slide back and forth (horizontally from the outside to the inside of the car) on the slide pins. The slide pins are what allows the caliper to center on the brake rotor as the piston moves. If the slide pins are sticky or seized, the caliper can't slide and won't work properly. This is one of the great joys of having floating brake calipers. But they're cheap, so we overlook that shortcoming.
