You can plan on spending anywhere from 400 to well over a grand for full leathers; and that's not including the boots or gloves to go with them!!!!!!!
I reccomend this site: http://www.motoliberty.com/default.asp
i spend alot of time at the track, so what i'm saying is fact, sure there is more than one track in america so offer may not valid at all locations, results may very, buyer beware, etc. etc. but i go to VMSP which is one of the country's premier drag racing facilities and are sanctioned by the NHRA so i think they would be more strict that most other tracks
if you trap below 120 mph then all you need is a helmet(i would imagine SNELL is minimum, maybe not, i've seen plenty of DOT helmets), jacket(i've seen mesh go down the strip on more than one occasion), gloves, shoes(don't have to be boots), pants(jeans are fine), headlight/tail light of some sort, chain guard is a must(they take this pretty seriously, but the stock one is fine)
if you trap above 120 then you need leather pants and leather jacket and a teathered kill switch, but thats about it... if your going to run sub 9.99's then technically you need to be ihra certified, 6 runs total...4 between 10.00 and 11.99..last 2 sub 9.99 w/ a ihra official watching you, although this doesn't seem to be stressed except for semi-serious levels of competition
as far as gear for drag racing, i would recommend a 2-piece suit or simply a leather jacket and pair of leather pants, 1 piece isn't nearly as comfortable, and since you'll be spending a ton of time off the bike waiting for piece of shit cars to run their pathetic 15 second runs or blow up and spew oil all over the track its nice to be able to unzip and walk around normally, also being hunched over for the launch is alot more comfortable in a 2 piece, a proper fitting 1 piece will make it harder to get your body where you want to be at the launch, and if your foot shifting like me then getting your foot to the peg for the 1-2 shift is a bit harder in a tight 1 piece
i got my 2 piece technic lightening suit for 199$, it was last years color scheme so it was on sale dirt cheap, i'm all about safety, but going down on the strip isn't nearly as certain as on the street or a road course, so i'd go for something cheap and comfortable over a top of the line suit, unless your budget allows so

Alright cool. Thanks for the help guys. I was gonna go to VMP this sat. on a track rental but the last time i did it was pretty expensive, not to mention i still have to buy equipment. I might just wait a couple of weeks and run behind, like you said, a bunch of piece of crap 15sec cars spewing oil all over the place. I am not interested in a million runs, which is typically what you get out of a rental, so im not really willing to spend tons of dough to do it again.
what exactly is a rental and how much does that usually cost?... i can't imagine you actually mean renting it yourself as i could only guess how much they would want for that, so i'd guess some orginization will rent the track out and charge a higher fee but only let X number of people run
the best time to get lots of runs is to get there early as soon as the track opens for runs to when the racing actuallys starts, usually 5-6, and then again when the racing has ended, 10-11... sometimes theres only a half hour window before or after the racing but you can usually run back to back with out even shutting off your bike during that time, otherwise expect about one run an hour on an average night
i'll most likely be there this friday
