Worry about learning to ride at 100% first before you start modding the bike! But to answer your question, the 600!

I kind of agree. If you have the self restraint to take it easy for quite a while then go with the CBR. Just know that the CBR600 is most likely faster than you think it is and you could get yourself in BIG trouble on it. The hardest thing is going to be getting on something that fast and not going fast on it. You'll have the urge to twist the throttle before you know how to get yourself out of dangerous situations. Simple things like stopping and turning are a lot different on a bike than a car. When you first get the bike stay off busy roads. Find some low traffic, slow moving back roads and learn how the bike handles a little. Just be careful, they can be a lot of fun but they can be very dangerous.

No offense dude; but if you're wanting to lear the "lingo" and how to mod the bike BEFORE you even own one?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!? I'm not thinking getting a bike is in your best interests..................

You should be asking about the safety course and what gear to wear and some helpful hints and crap like that. Not how can I mod my cbr............

But go ahead and get a bike that I can get parts from you with, once you wreck it........so I reccomend a CBR 600F4. Because with your mentality you'll be trying to wheelie it in second gear on the highway before you learn how to corner it. And I can always use some cheap parts!

Well, I'm new to the sport and I'd like any suggestions regarding the former that you may have.

If you're in the military they offer a safety course that you MUST attend just being a military member; and it's free. If not you can take a course through many of the local colleges like TCC; prices average around 100 I believe? Some even offer 250's for you to ride if you don't own your own motorcycle. Once you get the certificate of completion you can go to the DMV and get your license.

As for gear...........

Full face helmet is a must!
Long fingered gloves are a must!
Jeans are a must!
Over the ankle boots are a must!
Long sleaved shirt is a must!
Textile or lether jacket is a plus (a must in MY opinion)

I reccomend getting your learner's permit; it's cheap and easy to get, plus it makes you legal. Cops/judges around here don't play with motorcyclists. If you're caught riding without a license, or riding on a permit without a licensed person with you they'll throw the book at you!

Get someone to teach you to ride who is responsible and will start you off with the basics of riding vice taking you on the highway and making sure you can do 85mph. The basics as in practicing emergency braking so if it happens for real you'll be prepared with the right sequence of events so you'll live through it!!!! Practice makes perfect.

As soon as I get a rear tire I'll be willing to help anyone out if I have the time. I'll hopefully be getting some tires this week, so next weekend is fine.

I'd love to meet some of you guys anyway.

My final advice would be to learn the proper way to ride to keep you safe before you start fooling around on it. If you reverse that order you might not be around long enough to learn how to ride it safely!

well I have already taken the safty course at tncc. Now i am just shopping around. And I was just asking about the aftermarket product that may be out for the bikes. So you are now assuming that I am going to wreck the bike.Well that proves how close the bike community is in the hampton roads area.

Hahaha, people can only assume because of statistics. I still think you can get a 600, because you have already had 10 hours straight on a 250 (the bikes at tncc were 250's). If you felt comfortable on those a 600 will feel about the same (as far as the weight, just a little heavier) but it will pack more juice (so go easy on the throttle until you have your friction point just right and ur used to it. From there, its all about self control, thats why i dont see 600's as bad starter bikes, as long as you have taken the class and gotten the xp on a bike. I would suggest you test ride anything that u plan on riding. Its what i did when i picked up my 6, it felt different, but i quickly got used to it. Good luck man.

It's tough love here.
as for your question on either getting a 250 or a 600, now thats a tough choice given the price you quoted.

I would go with the cbr.
what year is it?

also remember guys, starting on a 250 doesn't make you wreck-proof... i see lots of guys start on a 1000, 750 and wreck and everyone is like "told you to start on a 600", well i'm sorry but i think alot of them are just dumbasses and would have wrecked just the same on a 600... same goes for a 250, if you can't survive on a 600 chances are you probably would have gone down just the same on a moped, starting on the right bike greatly increases your odds of being around next season, but it isn't the be-all end-all of learning... i would not recommend starting on anything bigger than a 600 or anything newer than a 2000, but if your mature and read alot, have some good friend's to help you out, take the course, and get good gear then starting on a 600(not a 2004) is possible, i did it, sort of... got the bare essentials down on a 81 CB450 in some parking lots because i had zero experience, i had never even started up a dirt bike, but then got on a 1995 honda cbr 600 f3 and learned comfortably on that

can it be done? yes... can everyone do it? no... so you need to look in the mirror and be honest to yourself and decide if you have enough self preservation to either A)be mature enough on a 600, or B)realize you won't be able to contain yourself and get on a 250
