After 9/11 there were a bunch of new laws made up having to do with insurance and vehicle registration. You cannot have tags in Va without insurance, unless you paid the 500 dollar (per 6 months) waiver, if you own the car.

And if you do not have the title in your hot little hands you have to have the minimum full coverage for the state that it's registered in.

If you get caught your license WILL be suspended/revoked until you pay any and all fines, and you'll have to carry an SR-22 on your insurance for 3 years.

Trust me on this, I know.

You may be able to reduce coverage to comprehensive (since in theory there is no collision risk if you're not riding). Check with insurance and the lien holder to find out what their rule is. If you do reduce coverage and decide to go ride on a nice winter day and something happens though, you're screwed. And as a few others have mentioned, it's a $500 when the insurance co. tells DMV you dropped coverage and you still have plates on it.

you are screwing yourself in the end if you do that. insurance companies give discounts on renewal dates. by canceling it you have to start all over each year. You also run the risk ofnot having your plates turned in on time and haven to carry a sr22. Which you will have to carry for 3 years on types of insurance you have. Make sure if you do this, that you turn in plates before you cancel insurance. Depending on your company they may do what is called short rate and charge you a few for cancellation. Like home dude said up top there might be some days that are warm that you might just want to go ride on or someone might break into your garage and steal. One thing for sure your leinholder will demand you carry full coverage and if coverage is not supplied they can do 1 of 2 thingy. Add insurance on to your payment which is really expensive and that only covers they and not you or they may repo the bike and fuck up your credit. Hopefully that helped some.
I have seen a lot of people try this and fail some may get by but most of the time they get caught. By law the insurance company has to tell dmv within i think 10 days of all cancellations. I work for a few insuranec compaines and know for a fact it ant worth it.

are you referring to if you are caught on the street w/o insurance? cause if you arent driving the car, or the car is totalled etc. you drop the insurance, the plates stay still i dont see why they would cause you to have an SR-22 if you have pics to prove that the car didnt go anywhere lol.

DMV doesn't care about pics. If you have plates on the vehicle you need to have either a valid insurance policy or file an SR-22.

He is exactly right. DMV does not car what the car is doing, if it has plates on it, it better be insured. I have seen people drop there insurance cause their car broke down and it was gonna be in te shop for awhile getting fixed. They left their tags on thinking since it wasnt on the road it didnt need insrance. Well DMV caught them and they got ined 500 per vechile that is not insured wh tags on it plus a sr 22 for three years, and the suspeded their lcense until they paid te 500 and another few to reinsate their license.

All you have to do is call dmv and tell then to deactivate the tags. I did it and it wasn't a big deal or anything...Just 5 min on the phone and I can leave my tags on the bike and don't have to pay any fees next year to get it back on the road.
