The engine was a SBC 350 that had been turbocharged. The engine was not a radical departure for the engine avaliable in the Vette at that time. 880 hp out of a turbo 350 sbc is not that great of a feat, I know of 1000+hp packages that were avaliable. Callaway did alot of work on the aero package to make the car stable at those speeds.
A bit of triva, the engine was built by John Lingenfelter and he was behind the wheel on the record run.

Guiness book of world recods still says the mid 90's McLaren is the winnaar.
To be honest with you, I would never think of this car as an actual "production" car.
If you look up the VIN on one of those, I bet you anything it still says the base model 911 GT2, not their 250mph variant. The McLaren is obviously a different story (which is why it's still in there.)
