How trustworthy is this place in Vinton? What do you guys recommend she does? Pull it ourselves and replace it? Never done a starter before, is it a simple bolt/unbolt affair? How much $ are we looking at? What are other options aside from having this unit rebuilt by the place in vinton, and what might the costs be for these options?

go figure.....

starter is 242 my cost. getting the old one rebuilt is usually 50-100 bucks. if it were me, i would find a good used one from IAR or Old Dominion and throw it on there.

Pikes Generator Service in Vinton.. down from the police station adjacent to the railroad tracks.

I think I paid $40 for mine to have it rebuilt. Starter isn't too big of a deal, and I believe you can do it yourself considering (IIRC) you did all the mods on your car yourself mostly, didn't you? If not, buy some brew and have a
buddy help you. As Joey said, you could also just buy a new used unit and do it that way. Whatever.. Probably not going to find a working starter cheaper than having it rebuilt, but hey.. you never know.

I can check around on VWvortex if you want. Maybe I can call in a favor from a friend and get you one for a good price.. he's got a VW salvage yard in Florida.

Yea I do all my own mods on my car, just this being not my car, and never having pulled/installed a starter before I didnt know if it were harder than it sounds. Sometimes you think things are easy, and they throw you for a loop, which is why I was asking if it was difficult for someone to perform with minimal tools, but a good knowledge base.

It wasn't mean to be an insult bro..

My point was that I assume you can turn a wrench, metaphorically, if you've done all your own mods. It's nothing you can't handle. They're not really as bad as people say they are to work on
