Bike people
like zx12 said, problem with buying a new or newer bike is dropping it has more effect on its resale value, buy a 05' gsx-r 600, drop it once, and you have a $4,000 bike that you owe $9,000 on, whether you want to move up, move down, or quit riding all together your stuck with that bike for 5 years or whatever til you pay it off... buy a 2,000$ F2, drop it 5 times, you can probably still sell it for $2,000 because there is such a huge market for a cheap bike and people shopping in that sub $2,000 range aren't going to care about damage nearly as much

Theirs a couple of issues at hand here.
1. Is a Honda F2 a good starter bike?
In my opinion it would make and all right starter bike if you have had some experience on dirt bikes or have ridden before. If not you might want to look at a 500, but that’s just my opinion. I'm sure you've heard all the reasons to start small so I'm not going to go into that.
2. Is a Honda F2 with 18k miles good?
Why wouldn't it be? If it has been taken care of and not abused it should last as long as you want to ride it. And the "newest and best" argument is pure BS. Some people need to have the latest and greatest toys, that’s fine for them but just because something is made in the early 90's doesn't mean it can't smoke a bike built in 2005 with the right rider on it. It all comes down to the rider IMO.
Good luck with getting into bikes, it's really a great experience. I'm also considering looking at an F3 for my next bike or the SV650. Haven’t made up my mind yet. But for now the ninja 500R is all the bike I need
